How to fish for white crappie

White crappie are a schooling panfish very similar to the black crappie in habits and appeal, but more tolerant of turbid, silty, and warmer water - so they often dominate in murky rivers, reservoirs, and backwaters where black crappie are scarce. Like their relative they suspend around submerged structure such as timber, brush, and bridge pilings, so a small jig or minnow under a slip float, fished at the depth fish are holding, is the standard, highly effective approach. Spring, as fish move shallow to spawn, is the most productive and popular window. They share the black crappie's soft 'paper mouth', so a light touch on the hookset and steady pressure during the fight reduce lost fish. On a location page, white crappie are a popular, good-eating panfish especially suited to murkier, warmer waters.
