How to fish for spotted gar

Spotted gar are a smaller, spotted relative of the longnose gar, an ambush predator of clear, heavily-vegetated warm lakes, backwaters, and slow rivers, patterned with dark spots on the body and head. Like other gar they can gulp air to tolerate warm, low-oxygen water, and they hunt small fish from cover near the surface. They're an uncommon, localized species in this region - a distinctive if difficult target, taken like other gar with rope lures or specialized rigs because of their hard, bony beaks. On a location page, spotted gar are an uncommon warmwater predator tied to clear, weedy, vegetated shallows.
