How to fish for silver lamprey

Silver lamprey are a native parasitic lamprey that, as adults, attach to and feed on the blood of larger fish - but as a native species that co-evolved with its hosts, it generally exists in balance with them and does not cause the devastation the invasive sea lamprey does. They spend years as harmless filter-feeding larvae in clean stream sediment before transforming. They aren't an angling target, and their presence is a normal part of a native fish community rather than an alarm. On a location page, a silver lamprey is best distinguished from the invasive sea lamprey - the native species is part of a balanced system, while the sea lamprey is a destructive invader.
