Shorthead redhorse are the most widespread and adaptable of the redhorse, a hardy sucker of rivers and lakes recognized by its bright red-orange fins and downturned mouth, and more tolerant of turbid and varied conditions than its clean-water relatives. They're caught incidentally on bottom baits and targeted by some anglers on their strong spring spawning runs into current below dams and riffles, where they gather in numbers and fight surprisingly well. They feed on bottom invertebrates.
