How to fish for sea lamprey

Sea lamprey are an invasive, parasitic fish and one of the most destructive introductions in the Great Lakes' history - as adults they attach to large fish with a rasping sucker mouth and feed on blood and body fluids, and a single lamprey can kill dozens of pounds of fish over its life. They devastated native lake trout and whitefish populations after invading, and they remain the target of an enormous, ongoing binational control program of stream barriers and larval treatment that costs millions each year. They aren't a species anyone fishes for; their relevance on a location page is entirely negative - as a threat to the trout, salmon, and whitefish anglers value. Wounds and round scars from lamprey are still seen on Great Lakes gamefish, a visible reminder of why control efforts continue.
