How to fish for round whitefish

Round whitefish are a slender, bottom-oriented coldwater coregonid, less commonly targeted than lake whitefish but caught the same way when they are: small jigs or bait fished with a light touch right on or near bottom, most often through the ice, where they school in accessible depths. Like their relatives they have small, downturned mouths built for picking invertebrates off bottom, so subtle presentations and small hooks outproduce aggressive jigging. They're a cold, deep-water fish in summer and, like lake and round whitefish generally, spawn in fall over shallow rocky or gravel areas - the most predictable window to encounter them outside of ice season. They're good eating and a pleasant incidental catch for anglers targeting whitefish or lake trout over the same cold, deep structure.
