Round goby are a small, bottom-dwelling invasive fish from the Black and Caspian Sea region that has spread explosively through the Great Lakes and connected waters, where they aggressively defend cover, feed on invertebrates and fish eggs, and steal bait relentlessly from bottom anglers. They're a genuine ecological problem - preying on the eggs and fry of native fish and competing for habitat - but they've also become a major food source for smallmouth bass and walleye, which now key on them heavily, so their presence has reshaped how and where those predators feed. They're caught constantly, and often unintentionally, on bottom baits.
