How to fish for rainbow darter

Rainbow darter are a small, vividly-colored fish of clean, gravel-bottomed riffles, where breeding males turn brilliant blue and orange. Like other darters they lack a swim bladder and dart along the bottom in short hops, holding in fast, oxygen-rich water. They aren't an angling target - they're a forage fish and, importantly, a sensitive indicator species, since they vanish quickly from silted or polluted streams. On a location page, a rainbow darter record is a genuine sign of clean, well-oxygenated riffle habitat and a healthy stream forage base rather than something to fish for.
