Northern hog sucker are an odd-looking, bottom-hugging sucker of clean, flowing streams, with a large blocky head and a body built to hold position on the bottom in current while it roots invertebrates out from under stones. They aren't an angling target - they're a forage fish and, importantly, an indicator species, since their need for clean, well-oxygenated riffle water makes their presence a genuine sign of a healthy stream. They're often seen displacing small stones as they feed, sometimes with other fish following to grab dislodged food.
