How to fish for northern brook lamprey

Northern brook lamprey are a small, non-parasitic native lamprey - unlike the sea lamprey, the adults don't feed on other fish at all; they live most of their lives as filter-feeding larvae (ammocoetes) burrowed in the silt of clean streams, then spawn and die without ever parasitizing anything. They're not remotely an angling target, but they're an important indicator species: because their burrowing larvae need clean, well-oxygenated stream sediment and years of stable habitat, their presence signals a healthy, unpolluted stream. On a location page, a native brook lamprey record is a positive sign of stream quality, and it shouldn't be confused with the destructive invasive sea lamprey.
