Nipigon cisco are a deepwater cisco associated with Lake Nipigon and other northern lakes, part of the notoriously complex and much-revised group of cold-water coregonines whose exact taxonomy is still being worked out. Like the other deepwater ciscoes, they're a plankton-feeding, cold-water schooling fish of deep, well-oxygenated water rather than an angling target. Their importance is ecological - forage for lake trout and other deep, cold-water predators, and an indicator of the cold, oxygen-rich deep-water habitat those predators need.
