How to fish for mooneye

Mooneye are a silvery, deep-bodied, large-eyed fish of clear rivers and lakes, superficially herring-like, that feed heavily on insects at and near the surface. They're a minor but genuine light-tackle and fly-rod target - they'll take small flies, spinners, and bait, rising freely to insects and giving a lively account on ultralight gear, even though they're bony and little-used as food. They favor clear, moderately-flowing water and are sensitive to heavy turbidity. On a location page, mooneye are both an occasional light-tackle catch and a forage species, and their presence points to reasonably clear water.
