How to fish for lake sturgeon

Lake sturgeon are a giant, ancient, bottom-feeding species that can live over a century and reach enormous sizes - a genuine trophy and, in many waters, a strictly protected one, so checking regulations before targeting them is not optional: seasons are often short or closed, and many populations are catch-and-release only or fully protected. Where legal, they're fished on bottom with natural bait (nightcrawlers, cut bait, or roe) fished still on a stout rod, since sturgeon cruise the bottom of large rivers and lakes rooting out invertebrates with their sensitive, whiskered snouts. They're most often found in deep holes, river channels, and near current in large river systems. A hooked sturgeon is a genuinely powerful, long fight, and because they're so slow-growing and long-lived, careful handling - keeping large fish in the water, supporting the body, minimizing air exposure - matters enormously for a fish that may be older than the angler. This is a species to target with real respect for the regulations and the fish's fragility, not a numbers game.
