How to fish for greater redhorse

Greater redhorse are the largest of the redhorse suckers, a clean-water species of well-oxygenated rivers and lakes that has declined where waters have been degraded, making it a good indicator of high-quality habitat. They're caught incidentally on bottom baits and occasionally targeted on spring spawning runs, where their size makes them a strong light-tackle fish. Like other redhorse they root invertebrates off the bottom and depend on clean, oxygenated water. On a location page, a greater redhorse record is a positive sign of a healthy river system and a substantial forage item for large predators, rather than a routine angling target.
