How to fish for freshwater drum

Freshwater drum - also called sheepshead - are a deep-bodied, bottom-feeding fish of large rivers and lakes, the only North American freshwater member of the drum family and named for the low grunting sound males produce. They're caught, often incidentally, on bottom baits like worms, crayfish, and cut bait, and on jigs and crankbaits meant for walleye, fighting hard with a strong, dogged pull. They feed heavily on invertebrates and mollusks, crushing snails and clams with specialized throat teeth, and are increasingly useful predators of invasive zebra mussels. On a location page, freshwater drum are a hard-fighting, underrated catch of larger warm waters and a reliable bottom-feeding presence.
