How to fish for chain pickerel

Chain pickerel are a smaller, aggressive member of the pike family, an ambush predator of weedy, quiet water that strikes hard and fights well on light tackle - a genuinely fun target, especially through winter, when they stay active and are a popular ice-fishing catch. They hold in and around vegetation and cover and hammer spoons, spinnerbaits, in-line spinners, and minnow-imitating lures worked along weed edges, much like a scaled-down pike. Like their larger relatives they have sharp teeth, so a light wire or heavy fluorocarbon leader saves lures and reduces bite-offs. They spawn early in cold water and are most aggressive in cool conditions. On a location page, chain pickerel are a willing, hard-hitting light-tackle predator of weedy water.
