How to fish for bowfin

Bowfin are a primitive, prehistoric-looking predator - a living fossil with a long dorsal fin and an armored, bony head - that can breathe air by gulping at the surface, letting them thrive in warm, weedy, low-oxygen backwaters where most predators can't survive. Long dismissed as a rough fish, they've earned a real following as a hard-fighting, powerful target that hammers spinnerbaits, soft plastics, and cut bait fished in and around heavy cover and vegetation. They have sharp teeth and a bony mouth, so strong hooks, heavy line, and careful hand placement matter. They're most active in warm water and often share the same weedy, mucky habitat as largemouth bass and gar.
