Blackfin cisco are a large deepwater cisco that once supported commercial fisheries in the upper Great Lakes but have been largely lost there, surviving mainly in a few deep, cold northern inland lakes and now considered a species at risk. They're a plankton-feeding, cold-water schooling fish of deep, highly-oxygenated water - forage and ecological indicator rather than an angling target. Where they persist, their presence signals an intact, deep, cold, oxygen-rich lake of real conservation value.
