How to fish for black redhorse

Black redhorse are a slender, clean-water sucker of clear streams and rivers, one of several redhorse species distinguished by their reddish fins and downturned bottom-feeding mouths. They're not a conventional gamefish, though they're caught incidentally on bottom baits and are targeted by some anglers during their spring spawning runs, when they move into shallow, gravelly riffles in numbers. Because they need clean, well-oxygenated flowing water, they're a sensitive species whose presence indicates good stream health. On a location page, black redhorse are best read as a forage species and a water-quality indicator - part of the food web supporting stream predators, and a sign the water is clean.
