Bigmouth buffalo are a large native sucker - not a carp, despite the resemblance - that filter-feeds on plankton and small invertebrates in warm, often turbid rivers, lakes, and backwaters, and can grow to impressive size. Remarkably, they're now known to be among the longest-lived freshwater fish anywhere, with some individuals exceeding a century, which makes conservative management increasingly important. They tolerate warm, low-oxygen water well and are taken mainly by bowfishers and, occasionally, on bottom baits, though their plankton diet makes them hard to catch on hook and line.
