How to fish for arctic char

Arctic char are a strikingly-colored cold-water char of the far North - closely related to brook and lake trout - and where they occur they're a genuine trophy, prized as much for their brilliant spawning coloration and excellent eating as for the fight. In their native northern lakes and rivers they're taken by casting or trolling spoons, spinners, and minnow-imitating plugs, and by fly fishing with bright streamers, especially where fish stage near river mouths and inlets. They're a true cold-water specialist that needs cold, well-oxygenated water year-round, holding deep in the rare southern lakes cold enough to support them and moving shallow in the cold water of early season and fall. Run timing around fall spawning is the most predictable window to find concentrated fish. Because many char populations are remote, slow-growing, and sensitive, careful handling and close attention to local regulations matter for a fish that can take many years to reach trophy size.
