How to fish for american eel

American eel are a remarkable, snake-like catadromous fish with one of the strangest life histories in freshwater - every one is born in the Atlantic's Sargasso Sea, drifts inland as a tiny transparent larva, and spends years or decades in rivers and lakes before returning to the ocean to spawn once and die. They're caught, mostly incidentally and mostly after dark, on bottom baits like worms and cut bait, since eels hunt by scent in low light and hold in deeper holes, under cover, and around structure. They're extraordinarily hardy, tolerating warm, low-oxygen water and even crossing damp ground between waters. Their numbers have declined sharply and they're protected or restricted in many jurisdictions, so checking current regulations is essential before keeping one. On a location page they're an uncommon, unusual catch and a species of real conservation concern rather than a routine target.
