How to fish for american brook lamprey

American brook lamprey are a small, non-parasitic native lamprey whose adults never feed on other fish - they spend years as filter-feeding larvae buried in clean stream sediment, then emerge briefly to spawn in gravel and die. They're not an angling target and pose no threat to gamefish, in sharp contrast to the invasive sea lamprey they superficially resemble. Because their larvae depend on clean, well-oxygenated streambeds, their presence is a genuine indicator of good stream health. On a location page, a native brook lamprey record is a positive water-quality signal, not a species to fish for or a cause for concern.
